With a New York attitude, this mural installation was in collaboration with local Non-Profit, Art-Empowerment and newly inspired, The Halal Wok, a Halal Chinese restaurant located close to the University of Cincinnati in Corryville on Short Vine. Designed by Wesley Ericson and Co-Led by La'De Richardson in the Fall of 2025. Featuring both a traditional Chinese and Arabic dragon, surrounded by common greetings in languages spoken around the globe highlighting the beautiful diversity within Cincinnati.
Using multiple RGB lights, I created a layered shadow effect with my favorite places cast onto a white wall and pedestals. This scene was one part of a larger immersive exhibition experience where people were invited to Be and to Do. Rest and Playfulness are key guides to any experience created as part of Mason's personal practice.
What could we do in your space? Where can the people just ~be~ in your space?
Wesley Ericson contributed to this mural as a senior apprentice on this BLINK project from 2019, Ericson received the 2019 Biggie Award from his dedication to his communities. The size of the mural ranging from 90 ft. x 45 ft. Located at 1005 Walnut St. Cincinnati, Ohio (corner of Walnut St. and W Central Parkway) Lead by 3 teaching artists and painted by 17 young artists, this mural features a series of mandala-like portals inviting the viewer in to explore pattern work encouraging personal reflection. The mural was activated with a performance and projection mapping designed by Woolfalk and featured as a part of the 2019 BLINK festival, Illuminated by ArtsWave and in collaboration with the Contemporary Arts Center.
Wesley Ericson Collaborated with Black Art Speaks, Art-Empowerment, and La'De Richardson, multiple years since 2021 to paint during each iteration of the BLM! Mural. Specifically the two letters, 'A' and 'L'. Alongside Seventeen Black Art Leaders, together with more than 70 artists, to narrate a story through each letter to elevate their aspirations for family, peace, equality, and inclusivity. They conclude with a powerful collective declaration that demands nothing more and nothing less. During Blink 2024, Each line of the poem, titled “We want what you want,” was projected in a light presentation on the east façade of Cincinnati City Hall where the mural is located downtown.
Using only three lights perfectly placed among the sunflowers and other fall majestics, the home breathes and dances to the tune of the crickets' calls.
What can be activated in your space with a handful of lights? What soundscapes do you imagine dancing alongside?
