About the Artist

Sharmon Davidson is a contemporary mixed media artist who uses colorful, dreamlike, nature-inspired imagery to explore her belief in the interconnectedness of everything in the universe. Recently, her work has increasingly focused on ecological concerns such as climate change and declining biodiversity. Her process begins with a multi-layered monotype to which layers of paint, pastel, and other media are then added. She is also working on a series of collages using vintage ephemera as materials; she enjoys giving these discarded objects a new life in her work.

Having studied the visual arts extensively at Northern Kentucky University and the Art Academy of Cincinnati, she has exhibited professionally for many years, but has only recently made it a full-time career. Her work has been published on magazine and book covers, and featured in literary and art publications, including Woven Tale Press Literary and Fine Arts Journal #5 and Storytelling With Collage: Techniques for Layering, Color, and Texture by Roxanne Evans Stout.

🌳🌎 🦋🎨 🧩📘
Why am I always going on about interconnection? Because it's the underlying catalyst, theme, and message of all my work. We don't just interact with the natural world, we are nature - every bit as much as a tree, a star, a drop of water, or a fox. If I say that we're made of stardust, or try to explain the 'butterfly effect' (though sometimes I do, in my blog posts), I get bogged down in words. My hope is that the images I create will allow you to not only glimpse this vital truth, but to feel it in a way that goes deeper than the intellect. If everyone truly knew this, how different would our world be?

As humans continue to disregard the interconnectedness of all things and the importance of biodiversity to the survival of any ecosystem, we are quickly losing untold numbers of animal and plant species. The population of North American birds has dropped nearly 30% since 1970 – a loss of almost three billion birds. We sacrifice these creatures on the altar of our ignorance and greed, driven by a culture of wasteful consumerism. The rubies coming from the blood of the bird symbolize its sacred and precious nature, and also a sense of hope that ultimately a new awakening may come from these sacrifices.

A magical goddess/queen/feminine spirit reclines on and within the golden earth, surrounded by beautiful roots and white flowers. Dressed in a white gown made of flowers, she dreams, nestled between the Earth and sky. The dark blue shape of a woman floats above her in the turquoise and purple sky. Perhaps this is her spirit, her dream-self or astral body, flying free into unknown realms. Or, it may be taking a message into the spirit world, to someone she loves. Will it meet with the spirit of her sleeping lover, or someone she loves who has gone from the earthly life? When she wakes, will she remember where her spirit has been? Or was it just a dream?

Kalachakra Matrix is about the sacred beauty of our natural world. A plant growing on top of a mountain refers to Mount Meru, of Buddhist cosmology. Surrounding the plant and seed are the rings from the Kalachakra mandala, symbolizing the wheel of time.

A beautiful woman in a flower dress floats toward a bright opening in the sky - a liminal space, or threshold between one world and another. Perhaps she is about to enter the dream world or the astral realm. Wherever she's going, it is a place of peace.

A flower-headed girl rescues a bird who has become entangled in some type of mesh, symbolizing the potential of humans to take action to defend wild creatures. The thorns around her neck indicate she has done this at some cost to herself. I believe we have an obligation to preserve and protect wild creatures, with whom we are intricately interconnected.
